Afghan Houng - An Ancient And Noble Breed

Among the oldest recognisable types of dogs, the Afghan Hound acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was originally used to hunt hares and gazelles by coursing them.

This dog's temper is distant and dignified, suggesting some kind of a mysterious indulgence. An old afghan saying tells that the Afghan hound is looking both at you and through you. This dog has a strong personality and can be stubborn and quite selfish, responding not so precisely to the training exercises. The key is to make him think that what you want to get from him is his own idea and when this thing happens be sure not to forget to praise his cleverness. The Afghan Hounds are not suited to harsh training techniques and in case of brutish handling it will invariable refuse to do the precise exercise required.
The Afghan Hound is quite longeval, in comparison with the other large size dogs. They normaly live 12-14 years, but there have been cases of dogs living up to 18 years. The owner of an Afghan must take great consideration regarding the essential daily doze of physical exercise required by his animal companion. This dog gets really bored if he stays too much inside the house, on the couch, watching TV and you should know that a bored Afghan Hound is even worse than a cat. he can cause unimaginable damage to your home.
Another peculiaar aspect for this breed is that regarding his coat's caring. You have to make weekly his complete igiene, including bathing and brushing, otherwise his coat will became a messy mass. His characteristic coat will be fully grown by the time the animal reaches his 1 year of life. If the coat is not properly taken care of, the dogs will became susceptible to parasite infestation and develop skin diseases and mycosis.
